A building is complete only when people start living in it

“Architecture is not merely about creation, it is a search.  From social aspects to the mechanics of spaces and forms, from the beauty of light and shadow to striking a harmony with nature, it is essentially a continuing process of discovery and cohesion in the world. The journey is what contributes to our growth”, says Abin Chaudhuri.

Abin graduated from Jadavpur University, Kolkata in 1998 and pursued specialisation in Industrial Design at Domus Academy, Milan in 2003. He is an architect, innovator, quirky designer and inspired entrepreneur. His creative mind is constantly in the process of exploring new thoughts and ideas, drawing inspiration from ordinary things. He founded Abin Design Studio (ADS) in 2005. Today ADS is a well known young design firm in the country.

At ADS, architecture is an artistic expression as far as it transcends its purely utilitarian, technical and rational realm and turns into a metaphoric expression of the lived world, context and human condition. Their aim is to provide a ‘soul in the shell’.

In this residential project, the client’s needs and wants were put forward as an interesting mix of tradition in a modern setting. Vaastu compliance was an important factor for him, and this was taken into consideration from the very beginning.

A courtyard was planned as the focal point of the house. Just a narrow passage interjects the court with views on either side for uninterrupted continuity of the greens and water bodies, almost as if the house is interwoven with the landscape. “A building is complete only when people start living in it, but the movement of light and shade through the house had begun to breathe life and warmth into the home welcoming its users in”, opiones Abin. The home was planned where the living spaces look across the water court to the large volume of the dining area. Indoor and outdoor spaces are seamlessly connected across greens and blues, through stone and glass and across different levels. To the outsider, the view across the water body is enigmatic as the fins reveal ‘hit-and-miss’ glimpses of the inside, making one look twice!

Abin says, “With every project we feel ourselves becoming more mature. We see a finesse developing and we realise that we still have a long way to go. However, we also notice that we have learnt something at the end of the day. This spirit of learning from everything around us is what keeps our fire burning”.
